South Dakota Introduces New Direct Shipper Report

Brendan Magauran | November 18, 2016

The South Dakota Department of Revenue (DOR) has released a new a version of its Direct Shipment Report which now includes a column for the common carrier tracking number to be included for each shipment.

The DOR will also accept reports that wineries create on their own–as long as these bespoke reports have at least the same columns with the same header names as appear on the DOR’s template. All reports, returns and payments must be submitted electronically through EPath, the department’s online platform. Paper and emailed reports will not be accepted.

Wineries that hold a South Dakota Direct Wine Shipper license must file quarterly reports and sales and excise tax payments with the South Dakota Department of Revenue on or before the 15th day of the month following each quarterly period (April 15th, July 15th, November 15th and January 15th). Detailed instructions for filing the Quarterly Direct Wine Shipment Report and Sales & Use Tax Return are also available from the Wine Institute.

Wineries can download the new Direct Shipment Report Template from the Wine Institute’s South Dakota page (under Relevant Documents).  ShipCompliant clients will have this additional column appear automatically on their reports, and do not need to take any additional action. This will first be available for the reports due in January.
